Gonzalez is MLBPA's player of the year

NEW YORK, Oct. 29 (UPI) -- Colorado outfielder Carlos Gonzalez was selected the 2010 Player of the Year by the Major League Baseball Players Association.

Gonzalez led the National League with a.336 batting average and 197 hits. His runs-batted-in total of 117 was second in the National League and he had 34 home runs, which was fourth-best in the league.

The MLBPA, in its announcement Friday, said Gonzalez topped Texas outfielder Josh Hamilton and Cincinnati first baseman Joey Votto for the Player of the Year honor.

Gonzalez earlier in the week was announced as the winner of the NL Outstanding Player. Hamilton had taken the same award in the American League.

The MLBPA also said Detroit third baseman Brandon Inge would be honored as its Marvin Miller Man of the Year. That award is given to a player who inspires both on the field and off. The union pointed to Inge's work with the C.S. Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor, Mich., as part of the reason for the award.
