DETROIT, Oct. 28 (UPI) -- Lauri Korpikoski's shorthanded goal gave Phoenix a 3-0 lead in the first period Thursday and the Coyotes held on to defeat Detroit 4-2.
Korpikoski clinched the victory by scoring into an empty net with 58 seconds left in the third after Detroit had cut its deficit to one early in the period.
In three seasons with the Coyotes, Korpikoski had scored just 11 times in 147 games before producing two goals against the Red Wings.
Radim Vrbata and Keith Yandle delivered the first two Phoenix goals, those tallies coming 1:55 apart in the first.
Johan Franzen's sixth goal cut Detroit's deficit to 3-1 with 6:55 left in the second and Tomas Holmstrom scored 3:56 into the third.
Phoenix ended a three-game losing streak and handed the Red Wings their first loss in four outings.
Ilya Bryzgalov made 43 saves in the victory. Chris Osgood stopped 32 shots for Detroit. The Red Wings won a previous meeting between the teams this season in overtime.
