WASHINGTON, Oct. 26 (UPI) -- Jim Riggleman will be back next year as the manager of the Washington Nationals, the team announced Tuesday.
Riggleman took over from Manny Acta as interim manager in 2009, guiding the team to a 33-42 record after the team went 26-61 under Acta. The Nationals finished the season 59-103 overall, the worst record in baseball that season.
Riggleman was given the job full-time before the 2010 campaign and the Nats responded by going 69-93 for their third straight last-place finish in the National League East.
The 57-year-old Riggleman this season had to contend with the season-ending elbow injury to prized rookie pitcher Stephen Strasburg as well outfielder Nyjer Morgan's behavior issues.
Riggleman served as the skipper of the Padres (1992-94), Cubs (1995-99) and Mariners (2008), compiling a 624-787 career mark in 11 years as a major league manager.
