Kings' Doughty placed on injured reserve

LOS ANGELES, Oct. 25 (UPI) -- Los Angeles Kings defenseman Drew Doughty has been placed on the injured reserve list, the team said Monday.

The Kings would only list "upper-body injury" as the reason for the move, but it comes after Doughty suffered an apparent concussion in the first period of Wednesday's game against the Carolina Hurricanes.

NHL rules state that players suffering from concussions must experience two consecutive symptom-free days and undergo a cognitive skills test before being allowed to return.

Doughty, 20, is among the best young defensemen in the league. He was a finalist last season for the Norris Trophy, which is awarded to the league's top defenseman.

He had one point and 2 penalty minutes in five games this season.
