Goerges beats Ivanovic in quarters

LUXEMBOURG, Oct. 22 (UPI) -- No. 8-seeded Julia Goerges on Friday beat the only other seeded player in the quarterfinals of the Luxembourg Open tennis tournament.

Goerges defeated fourth-seeded Ana Ivanovic 6-3, 6-1. She had eight aces and won 71 percent of the points on serve in finishing off the match in 60 minutes. Goerges saved the only break point she had to deal with.

Her semifinal opponent Saturday will be Angelique Kerber, who stopped Polona Hercog 6-4, 6-2 despite six double faults. Still, she only dropped serve once.

The other semifinal pairs Roberta Vinci against Anne Keothavong.

Keothavong won the only three-set match of the quarterfinals, topping Iveta Benesova 6-7 (3-7), 6-2, 6-4. She had a pair of service breaks in each set of the 2-hour, 41-minute match.

Vinci ousted Kirsten Flipkens 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 without losing her serve.
