Rezai among four upsets in Luxembourg

LUXEMBOURG, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- No. 2-seeded Aravane Rezai won only one game and was among four seeded players beaten Wednesday at the Luxembourg Open tennis tournament.

Kirsten Flipkens blasted Rezai 6-0, 6-1, breaking Rezai's serve five times in six games. Flipkens fired seven aces and won 68 percent of the points on serve and 65 percent for the match. Rezai won only two of her 16 second-serve points in the 47-minute, second-round match.

Seventh-seeded Jarmila Groth also lost a second-round match while No. 3-seeded Yanina Wickmayer and sixth-seeded Timea Bacsinszky dropped first-rounders.

Iveta Benesova defeated Groth 6-4, 7-5 by cashing in four of 14 break-point chances. Patty Schnyder advanced over Wickmayer with a 6-4, 6-4 decision and Barbora Zahlavova Strycova ousted Bacsinszky 7-5, 6-1, with the winners in each match posting six service breaks.

Also Wednesday, No. 8-seeded Julia Goerges claimed a second-round victory, beating Carla Suarez Navarro 6-2, 6-1 and Polona Hercog advanced out of the first round when Ivana Lisjak retired because of a left thigh strain after falling behind 6-2, 1-1.
