LA JOLLA, Calif., Oct. 19 (UPI) -- Former San Diego Chargers star Junior Seau has been released from a hospital a day after his car plunged off a coastal bluff, officials said Tuesday.

A spokeswoman for Scripps Memorial Hospital in La Jolla, Calif., confirmed the former NFL Defensive Player of the Year and eight-time pro bowler was released Tuesday morning, The San Diego Union-Tribune reported.

Seau suffered minor injuries when his sport utility vehicle went over a 30-foot bluff in Carlsbad, Calif., Monday morning. The accident happened 8 hours after Oceanside, Calif., police had arrested and briefly jailed Seau on suspicion of assaulting his 25-year-old girlfriend.

Police Lt. Kelly Cain said Seau told officers he had fallen asleep at the wheel before the mishap, the Union-Tribune reported.

Seau, 41, who played 13 years for the Chargers, is scheduled to appear Monday in San Diego County Superior Court for arraignment on charges of domestic violence.

Police said they are continuing to investigate the case. Oceanside Police Lt. Leonard Mata told the newspaper Seau's girlfriend suffered minor injuries and didn't need to be hospitalized.
