

LUXEMBOURG, Oct. 18 (UPI) -- Anne Keothavong won in straight sets Monday, the opening day of the Luxembourg Open tennis tournament.
Keothavong defeated Virginie Razzano 6-1, 6-4 by recording seven breaks in the nine games Razzano served. Keothavong lost only 12 points in taking control of the match in the first set.
Angelique Kerber also advanced, beating Yulia Putintseva 6-3, 6-1 in 64 minutes. Kerber dropped serve only once and broke Putintseva's serve five times.
Monday's other match saw Carla Suarez Navarro take a 6-4, 2-6, 7-5 victory over Kristina Barrois. Each player had six breaks but half of those by Suarez Navarro came in the third set.
Elena Dementieva, No. 9 in the world, is the top seed for the $220,000 Luxembourg Open. The tournament runs through Sunday when the champion will be given $37,000.
