Prices announced for 2012 Olympic games

LONDON, Oct. 15 (UPI) -- More than 90 percent of the tickets for the 2012 Olympic Games in London will be priced under $200, organizers said.

Tickets for the opening ceremonies range from about $38, to more than $3,880, the London 2012 Organizing Committee said Friday.

Nearly 9 million tickets will be available for the games. Tickets go on sale in March 2011, organizers said.

"We have three clear principles for our ticketing strategy: Tickets need to be affordable and accessible to as many people as possible, tickets are an important revenue stream for us to fund the Games and our ticketing plans have the clear aim of filling our venues to the rafters," said Seb Coe, chairman of the organizing committee.

The men's 100 meters final, perhaps the Games' most popular competition, has tickets priced from $96 to $1,400 and is the costliest event.

Organizers also charged a premium for prestige hospitality packages to allow 100,000 tickets to be donated to students in the United Kingdom, organizers said.

"The higher-priced tickets have provided us with the balance for us to provide millions (of tickets) available at lower prices," said Paul Deighton, chief executive officer of organizing committee.
