OTTAWA, Oct. 14 (UPI) -- Mike Fisher's second goal of the game Thursday, coming on the power play with 5:57 left in regulation, gave the Ottawa Senators a 3-2 victory over Carolina.
It was the first win of the season for the Senators and the first loss for the Hurricanes.
Fisher opened the scoring with 2:21 to go in the first and Milan Michalek gave the Senators a 2-0 lead heading into the third period.
Ottawa had to call on Brian Elliott to step in for goaltender Pascal Leclaire in the first period after Leclaire suffered a lower body injury. Elliott had a shutout working until Sergei Samsonov and Eric Staal scored 99 seconds apart during the opening half of the third period.
Fisher, however, put Ottawa back in front with a slap shot while Jussi Jokinen was serving a 4-minute penalty for high sticking.
Elliott finished with 19 saves and Cam Ward stopped 36 shots for the Hurricanes.
Ottawa had dropped its first three games of the season, one of them in overtime. Carolina had won its first two contests, both of which were played against Minnesota in Finland.
