WASHINGTON, Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Alex Ovechkin notched his first two goals of the new NHL season Saturday, helping the Washington Capital bury New Jersey 7-2.

One of Ovechkin's scores came on a penalty shot -- the second of his career -- and John Carlson added a goal and two assists for the Capitals, who celebrated their home opener with a one-sided victory.

Tomas Fleischmann had a goal and an assist, and Brooks Laich, Eric Fehr and Jason Chimera also scored to back Michal Neuvirth, who made 31 saves for Washington.

The Devils got goals from Henrik Tallinder and Jason Arnott.

New Jersey goalie Martin Brodeur was pulled after two periods. He was shelled for five goals on 20 shots before being yanked.
