NHL: New York Rangers 6, Buffalo 3

BUFFALO, N.Y., Oct. 9 (UPI) -- Derek Stepan's hat trick Saturday, including two goals in the second period, lifted the New York Rangers to a 6-3 season-opening victory over Buffalo.

Stepan's first tally midway through the initial frame put the Rangers up 1-0. His second and third scores came within 4 minutes of each other late in the second period and gave New York a 4-1 edge.

Brandon Dubinsky and Erik Christensen chipped in with goals, and Sean Avery assisted on two of Stepan's tallies.

Henrik Lundqvist stopped 31 of 34 shots in the Rangers' win.

Jordan Leopold scored a pair of goals and Ryan Miller was 22-of-27 in nets for Buffalo.
