Vikings fullback Felton charged with DWI
EDMONTON, Alberta, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- The Edmonton Oilers Wednesday sent one-time star defenseman Sheldon Souray to the American Hockey League.
Souray, 34, signed a five-year, $27 million contract with the Oilers in the summer of 2007 but has encountered injuries and controversy ever since.
Canadian broadcaster TSN reported the Oilers sent Souray to Hershey of the AHL rather than their top farm club in Oklahoma City to make him eligible to be claimed on waivers by other clubs should he be recalled to the NHL.
If another team claims him, that club would be responsible for splitting the remaining two years of his contract, which is valued at $4.5 million per season.
Souray suffered a broken hand in a fight with Calgary's Jarome Iginla, which became infected, as well as a concussion last season, limiting him to just 37 games.
The Oilers tried to trade Souray last season but found no takers, the report said.
