LIVERPOOL, England, Oct. 6 (UPI) -- The owners of the Boston Red Sox have gone across the pond to get into the soccer business, buying England's Liverpool Football Club.

The Liverpool team's board of directors said Wednesday it has agreed to sell the club to New England Sports Ventures, which owns the Red Sox, New England Sports Network, Fenway Sports Group and Roush Fenway Racing.

"I am delighted that we have been able to successfully conclude the sale process, which has been thorough and extensive," Liverpool FC Chairman Martin Broughton said. "The board decided to accept NESV's proposal on the basis that it best met the criteria we set out originally for a suitable new owner. NESV's philosophy is all about winning and they have fully demonstrated that at Red Sox."

Broughton said the board was "immensely impressed" with New England Sports Ventures' success and vision for the Liverpool soccer team.

The deal still needs the approval of the Premier League and there is a board membership dispute to resolve.
