
NEW YORK, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Jerry Crawford, Dana DeMuth, John Hirschbeck and Tim Welke were selected to be the umpire crew chiefs for the first round of the Major League Baseball playoffs.
Crawford and Welke will head up the crew working the American League Division Series while DeMuth and Hirschbeck will handle the National League playoffs.
Crawford's team will work the New York Yankees-Minnesota Twins series, which is set to begin Wednesday night. It is his 22nd post-season assignment. The rest of that umpire crew is Hunter Wendelstedt, Greg Gibson, Brian O'Nora, Gary Darling and Chris Guccione.
Welke, who has worked 16 post-season series, was assigned the series between Texas and Tampa Bay, which begins Wednesday in St. Petersburg, Fla. Joining Welke will be Jim Wolf, Jerry Meals, Bill Miller, Jeff Kellogg and Mike DiMuro.
The Cincinnati-Philadelphia series, beginning Wednesday in Philadelphia, will have 14-year post-season veteran Hirschbeck leading a crew that includes Bruce Dreckman, Sam Holbrook, Ed Rapuano, Gary Cederstrom and Rob Drake.
DeMuth, working his 16th playoff series, is chief of the crew at San Francisco, where Atlanta is the visiting team for games that begins Thursday. The other umpires there are Paul Nauert, Paul Emmel, Mike Winters, Jerry Layne and Ed Hickox
