NEWPORT, Wales, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Jose Maria Olazabal says he'd love to succeed Colin Montgomerie as Europe's Ryder Cup captain -- but only if his health allows.
Olazabal, a two-time Masters champion and seven-time Ryder Cup veteran, told reporters Monday at the Celtic Manor resort in Wales following Europe's victory over the United States that he would enthusiastically accept the role.
But, he added, he is concerned about suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, The Scotsman reported.
"We have talked about it but there is just one issue and that is my health," the Spanish champion said. "I would love to do it, but you have to fulfill certain things.
"You need to be close to the players and play with them during the qualifying process, that is why (health) is the only question mark."
The British newspaper The Independent reported Tuesday that Olazabal could be named Montgomerie's successor as early as next week when the Tournament Players Committee meets in Portugal.
