CHICAGO, Oct. 5 (UPI) -- Chicago Bulls power forward Carlos Boozer has undergone successful surgery on his broken right hand, the team said Tuesday.

Boozer, a high-priced off-season free agent signing by the Bulls, will likely miss the first eight weeks of the season.

The team said Dr. John Fernandez and Dr. Mark Cohen performed the procedure to repair the fifth metacarpal bone. The former Utah Jazz star broke his hand Saturday.

Boozer signed what was reported to be a five-year, $76 million deal with the Bulls this off-season after spending six years with the Jazz. He averaged 19.5 points and 11.2 rebounds in 78 games for them last season.

In 510 career contests over an eight-year pro career with Cleveland and Utah, Boozer has posted averages of 17.2 points, 10.2 rebounds and 2.5 assists.
