Flames sign veteran center Morrison

CALGARY, Alberta, Oct. 4 (UPI) -- The Calgary Flames have signed veteran center Brendan Morrison to a contract, the team announced Monday.

Terms of the deal weren't disclosed, but The (Vancouver, B.C.) Province reported it was for one year at $725,000.

The signing came one day after the 35-year-old veteran was released from a tryout contract with the Vancouver Canucks, for whom he once played.

"The emphasis is to get off to a good start and having a veteran in the top six is important," Flames assistant General Manager Jay Feaster told the team's Web site.

The Flames are dealing with a rash of injuries to their centers in training camp, with Daymond Langkow (neck), Matt Stajan (shoulder), Ryan Stone (knee) and David Moss (shoulder) all hurting.

Morrison played for the Washington Capitals last year, scoring 42 points, including 12 goals, in 74 games.

In his 829-game career with Washington, New Jersey, Vancouver, Anaheim and Dallas, Morrison has racked up 187 goals and 360 assists for 547 points.
