BOSTON, Oct. 3 (UPI) -- Eric Patterson drove in Bill Hall with a 10th-inning single Saturday and Boston downed the New York Yankees 7-6 in the second game of a doubleheader.
Hall led off the bottom of the 10th with a ringing double off Ivan Nova (1-2) which just missed going out. Kevin Cash sacrificed him to third and Patterson lined a run-scoring single to hand the Red Sox a double-header split.
Robert Manuel (1-0) collected his first major league win, tossing two scoreless frames.
Felipe Lopez went 3-for-5 and socked a solo homer and Daniel Nava added an RBI for the victors, who bounced back after dropping the opener 6-5, also in 10 innings.
Francisco Cervelli had two RBI and Robinson Cano went 3-for-3 for New York, which fell into a flat-footed tie with Tampa Bay for first place in the American League East.
The Yankees must win Sunday against Boston and the Rays must lose to Kansas City for New York to clinch the AL East on the last day of the regular season.
Should Tampa Bay win, the Yankees would be relegated to AL wild-card winner and open the playoffs on the road Wednesday at Minnesota.
