HARRISON, N.J., Oct. 2 (UPI) -- Dane Richards scored early and the goal stood up for a 1-0 Red Bull New York victory over the Kansas City Wizards.
Richards' goal in the 6th minute was his fourth this season and all have come in the past five games. He scored by stealing the ball off Kansas City defender Jimmy Conrad and firing it into the Wizards' net.
New York (14-8-5) clinched a spot in the Major League Soccer playoffs and sits atop the Eastern Conference standings after having the league's worst record last season.
The Wizards (9-11-6) peppered Red Bulls goalkeeper Bouna Coundoul with several shots, but he made a career-high 12 saves to earn his 10th save of the year.
The loss hurt Kansas City's playoff chances but it is not yet mathematically eliminated.
