COLUMBUS, Ohio, Oct. 2 (UPI) -- San Jose goalkeeper Jon Busch made four saves and Columbus netminder William Hesmer made three Saturday as the two teams slogged to a scoreless tie.
The closest thing to a score for the Earthquakes came in the 70th minute when leading scorer Chris Wondolowski directed a cross from Ryan Johnson toward the upper-left corner, only to have Hesmer lunge to push the ball just over the bar.
Busch's stiffest challenge came in the 75th minute when he directed a header by Chad Marshall over the top of the net.
The tie meant the Crew (13-7-7) lost the top spot in the Eastern Conference to Red Bull New York, who defeated the Kansas City Wizards. Columbus and New York both clinched post-season spots, however.
San Jose (11-8-7) also benefited from Kansas City's defeat to New York, as it opened a seven-point lead over the Wizards for the last playoff spot with four games left.
