Franchitti wins third IndyCar championship

HOMESTEAD, Fla., Oct. 2 (UPI) -- Dario Franchitti's eighth-place finish in Saturday's Indy 300 at Homestead-Miami Speedway clinched his third IZOD IndyCar Series title.

Franchitti's Indy crown was the third of his career, tying Sam Hornish Jr. for the most titles series history. He edged out Will Power for the honor after Power damaged his car's suspension in the 135th lap and finished 57 laps behind in 25th place.

Power entered Saturday's race with an 11-point lead but Franchitti ending up edging him by five points.

Target Chip Ganassi Racing's Scott Dixon, meanwhile, won the Homestead-Miami race, his third title of the season and the 24th of his IndyCar career.

Danica Patrick matched her season's best with a season-place finish.

Tony Kanaan came in third, followed by Ryan Briscoe and Helio Castroneves.
