
SEATTLE, Oct. 1 (UPI) -- Gio Gonzalez pitched seven scoreless innings and Chris Carter homered, drove in two runs and scored once Thursday in the Oakland A's 8-1 win over Seattle.
Gonzalez (15-9) allowed four hits and five walks and struck out eight.
Cliff Pennington homered, drove in a run and scored twice for Oakland.
Mariners starter Doug Fister (6-14) gave up six runs on 13 hits in 5 1/3 innings, with no walks and no strikeouts.
Oakland struck for four runs with two out in the fifth. Jeremy Hermida led off with a single and Rajai Davis and Daric Barton both singled to load the bases. Hermida scored on a balk, Mark Ellis drove in Davis and then scored behind Barton on a single by Jack Cust.
Seattle lost its 98th game of the season and needs to win two of its remaining three games with Oakland to avoid its second 100-loss season in the past three campaigns.
