ARLINGTON, Texas, Sept. 29 (UPI) -- Mitch Moreland came around from first to score on Guillermo Quiroz's ninth-inning throwing error Wednesday, handing Texas a 6-5 comeback win over Seattle.
The Rangers trailed 5-2 in the eighth inning but struck for four late runs to stun the Mariners, with the game-winner coming on an unusual play that was actually a strikeout by the Rangers' Nelson Cruz.
With the game tied in the ninth, Moreland drew a two-out walk from Dan Cortes (0-1). Cruz swung and missed for a third strike on a wild pitch that got past catcher Quiroz. The Seattle backstop quickly retrieved ball but fired wildly to first and it sailed into right field.
The Mariners' Ichiro Suzuki picked it up and threw home, but Moreland beat the throw to score the winning run.
The American League West champion Rangers took two of three in the series.
Texas scored three runs in the eighth to tie the score, with the final run coming on another Cortes wild pitch.
Julio Borbon and Michael Young each had two hits and an RBI. Neftali Feliz (4-3) got the victory with a scoreless top of the ninth.
Jason Vargas started for the M's, pitching six innings of one-run ball.
Justin Smoak pounded a two-run homer and Chone Figgins went 4-for-4 for Seattle.
