ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., Sept. 29 (UPI) -- Kevin Millwood had the highlight performance of a down season Wednesday, throwing seven shutout innings and carrying Baltimore to a 2-0 win over Tampa Bay.
The Rays suffered a disappointing setback after coming into the contest with a half-game lead over the New York Yankees in the American League East.
Prior to this season, Millwood had won 34 more games than he had lost in a 13-year career. He dropped his first eight decisions this season and Wednesday's win raised his record this season to a mere 4-16.
He allowed two hits with three walks and struck out seven. Jim Johnson worked the eighth and Koji Uehara turned in a perfect ninth for his 11th save.
Jeff Niemann (11-8) matched Millwood through six innings, giving up just two hits in that span.
Nick Markakis, however, drew a leadoff walk in the seventh and moved to second on a two-out single from Adam Jones. Both runners scored on a triple by Felix Pie.
The Rays have lost three out of four. They will finish the season with a four-game series in Kansas City beginning Thursday.
