MLB: Seattle 3, Texas 1

ARLINGTON, Texas, Sept. 28 (UPI) -- Felix Hernandez baffled Texas on one run over eight innings Tuesday and the Seattle Mariners handled the Rangers 3-1.

Hernandez (13-12) burnished his Cy Young Award credentials with another dominating performance, holding the American League West champs to five hits and two walks. He struck out five.

The Seattle right-hander lowered his earned run average to an AL-best 2.27 and raised his strikeout total to 232, also best in the league.

Former Ranger Justin Smoak got his second game-winning hit against his ex-teammates in as many games, smacking a two-run shot in the fourth to break a 1-1 tie.

Smoak came to the Mariners in a trade deadline deal for pitcher Cliff Lee.

Texas starter Scott Feldman (7-11) yielded three runs on five hits over 4 1/3 innings.
