ARLINGTON, Texas, Sept. 27 (UPI) -- Former Ranger Justin Smoak went 3-for-4 and smashed a three-run homer Monday in the Seattle Mariners' 7-5 victory over Texas.

Smoak, whom the Mariners obtained in the trade deadline deal that sent pitcher Cliff Lee to Texas, connected for his blast in the fifth inning, extending the M's lead to 6-1.

Franklin Gutierrez contributed a pair of hits and an RBI for Seattle, which took the first of a three-game set against the American League West champions.

David Pauley (4-8) earned the victory, surrendering two runs on eight hits over six frames, walking two and striking out three.

Texas starter C.J. Wilson (14-8) was lit up for six runs on eight hits over five innings of work.

Nelson Cruz socked a three-run homer and Vladimir Guerrero added a solo shot for the Rangers.
