SINGAPORE, Sept. 26 (UPI) -- Fernando Alonso won his third Formula One race in five tries Sunday, posting a convincing victory at the Singapore Grand Prix.

Alonso was involved in a pair of crashes but shook them off and survived a stiff challenge from Sebastian Vettel from Red Bull Racing for most of the race. One of the collisions involved Formula One title hopefuls Mark Webber and Lewis Hamilton.

Alonso's win moved him into second in the points race with 191, dropping Hamilton to third with 182 behind points leader Webber with 202.

Vettel finished second, 0.2 seconds behind Alonso, while Webber came in third.

McLaren's Jenson Button claimed the fourth spot and Mercedes GP's Nico Rosberg took fifth.
