Cochran widens SAS lead to four strokes

CARY, N.C., Sept. 25 (UPI) -- Russ Cochran moved closer to back-to-back Champions Tour wins Saturday when he extended his lead after two rounds of the SAS Championship.

Cochran, who won two weeks ago in South Korea, improved his first-round lead of one stroke to four shots, carding a 5-under 67 and finishing 36 holes at Prestonwood Country Club at 13-under-par 131.

Cochran would notch the tour's third back-to-back wins of the year if he can hang on. Fred Couples won the Toshiba Classic and Cap Cana Championship in consecutive starts, while Bernhard Langer prevailed in two majors in two weeks -- the Senior British Open and U.S. Senior Open.

Ted Schulz grabbed sole possession of second place at minus-9 after firing a 4-under 68.

Defending champion Tom Pernice Jr., who sank a hole-in-one Friday, shot a 1-under 71 and was able to hang onto a share of third place at 8-under 136, joining John Cook (64) and Nick Price (69) there.
