
OAKLAND, Calif., Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Kurt Suzuki and Cliff Pennington both drove in two runs Tuesday and Oakland handed the Chicago White Sox a 7-2 loss that clinched the AL Central for Minnesota.
Trevor Cahill (17-7) pitched eight innings and became the first Oakland hurler to win 17 games since Mark Mulder did it in 2004. Cahill gave up two runs on six hits and struck out seven while sending the White Sox to their eighth consecutive loss.
Rajai Davis went 3-for-5 for Oakland. He drove in one run and scored twice.
Mark Buehrle (12-12) gave up five runs on 11 hits and struck out five in six innings. The White Sox were outhit by Oakland 13-8 and committed three errors.
The Athletics scored three runs in the fourth inning to take a 5-0 lead. Chicago cut the lead to 5-2 with single runs in the fifth and sixth; however the A's tacked on two more in the bottom of the eighth.
