MINNEAPOLIS, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Denard Span singled home the go-ahead run Tuesday and the Minnesota Twins clinched the American League Central shortly after their 6-4 win over Cleveland.

Span's run-scoring highlighted a four-run eighth inning that allowed the Twins to erase a 4-2 deficit and down the Indians, reducing their magic number to clinch the AL Central to one.

About 90 minutes later, the second-place Chicago White Sox lost to the Oakland Athletics, giving the Twins their second straight division title and triggering a champagne-drenched celebration in the team's Target Field locker room.

Several Twins players also came back out onto the field to celebrate with fans who stuck around to wait out the A's victory over Chicago.

With the Twins trailing 4-2 entering the eighth, Delmon Young's run-scoring double off Justin Masterson (6-13) scored Trevor Plouffe to shave the deficit to one and Danny Valencia sent Young to third with a single.

Tony Sipp then came in to pitch and Jose Morales greeted him with a sacrifice fly to drive in the tying run, and Span followed with a single to chase home Valencia with the go-ahead run.

That made a winner of Glen Perkins (1-1), who tossed a scoreless top of the eighth. Matt Capps hurled a perfect ninth for his 15th Twins save.

Twins Manager Ron Gardenhire notched his 800th career win with the key victory.

Drew Sutton and Travis Hafner each had two hits and an RBI for the Indians.
