D-backs name Tower new general manager

PHOENIX, Sept. 22 (UPI) -- Former San Diego Padres general manager Kevin Towers was given the same position with the Arizona Diamondbacks Wednesday.

Towers became the third general manager in the Diamondbacks' franchise history after he and the team agreed to a two-year deal that includes club options.

He replaces interim general manager Jerry Dipoto, who took over when Josh Byrnes was fired July 1 after the D-backs had compiled a dismal 31-48 record.

"Kevin is an experienced general manager who brings years of success, roster construction, pitching knowledge, industry networking and talent evaluation to the table," club president Derrick Hall said.

Towers served as the Padres' GM for 14 seasons before being fired in October 2009. His team won National League West titles in 1996, 1998, 2005 and 2006, reaching the World Series in 1998.
