MSU Coach Mark Dantonio leaves hospital

EAST LANSING, Mich., Sept. 21 (UPI) -- Michigan State football head Coach Mark Dantonio was discharged from a hospital Tuesday, two days after suffering a mild heart attack, school officials said.

MSU Athletic Director Mark Hollis told the Lansing State Journal Dantonio will continue to recuperate at home and won't be involved in the Spartans' next game, a home contest Saturday against Northern Colorado.

The Michigan State mentor had a small, metallic stent inserted to open a blocked blood vessel that led to the heart during the early Sunday cardiac catheterization procedure.

The heart attack came only hours after the Spartans pulled out a 34-31 overtime victory over Notre Dame.

Hollis said Dantonio will receive a checkup early next week and an assessment will be made then as to whether he'll be to return in time for the Spartans' Oct. 2 Big Ten opener against Wisconsin.

Michigan State is ranked 23rd this week in the USA Today/ESPN football coaches' poll.
