
ANAHEIM, Calif., Sept. 21 (UPI) -- Jeff Mathis, Howie Kendrick and Bobby Abreu each hit RBI doubles in the decisive fourth inning Monday and the Los Angeles Angels downed Texas 7-4.
Torii Hunter contributed a two-run single in the sixth and Hideki Matsui added a pinch-hit RBI single as the Angels took the first of a three-game series with the Rangers, who lead the AL West by eight games over second-place Oakland.
Jered Weaver (13-11) got the victory, allowing three runs on nine hits through 6 2/3 innings, walking two and striking out two.
Fernando Rodney picked up his 12th save despite allowing a pair of runners in the ninth.
Texas starter Derek Holland (3-4) was roughed up for four runs in 3 2/3 innings.
David Murphy went 5-for-5 and Chris Davis homered for the Rangers, whose magic number to clinch the American League West remained at six.
