METZ, France, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- Seventh-seeded Tommy Robredo took a first-round victory in straight sets Monday at the ATP's Open de Moselle in France.
Robredo topped Daniel Brands 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) in a brisk 69 minutes. Robredo lost five points in four first-set service games in establishing control, and yielded only eight points in six games and the tie-breaker in the second.
Also Monday, Michael Berrer ousted Rainer Schuettler 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 and Denis Istomin topped Florent Serra 6-4, 6-4.
Berrer saved all four of the break-point situations he faced in moving into the second round.
Serra evened the second set at 4-4 with his second break of the set but Istomin answered with his third to get in position to serve out the match, which he did without dropping a point.
Istomin will go against Robredo in the second round but Berrer will have to wait to learn his next opponent until the first round is completed Tuesday.
