MIAMI, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- Brad Davis smacked a grand slam and Chris Volstad pitched a shutout Monday in the Florida Marlins' 4-0 triumph over St. Louis in a rescheduled game.
Cardinals starter Chris Carpenter (15-8) yielded a second-inning double to Dan Uggla, then issued a walk to Gaby Sanchez and an intentional pass to Mike Stanton before Davis hit a 2-0 pitch over the left field wall for his first career grand slam.
Volstad (10-9) allowed five hits, walked two and struck out three in his first start since serving a six-game suspension for his role in a brawl during a Sept. 1 game against Washington.
Monday's game was a make-up of an Aug. 8 postponement at Sun Life Stadium.
Second-place St. Louis came into the contest six games behind Cincinnati in the National League Central. The Reds' magic number to clinch the division fell to seven with the Cardinals' loss.
