CHICAGO, Sept. 20 (UPI) -- Gerald Laird's RBI single in the top of the 11th Sunday gave Detroit the lead and the Tigers held off a Chicago rally in the bottom of the inning to win 9-7.
The White Sox, who had forced the extra innings by scoring four times in the ninth, loaded the bases in their half of the 11th but couldn't get the tying runs home. It was Chicago's sixth straight loss and left the White Sox 10 games behind front-running Minnesota in the American League Central with 13 games remaining.
Laird also drove in a run with a double in the Tigers' six-run seventh inning. Casper Wells and Scott Sizemore contributed homers for the Tigers, who swept the three-game series.
A.J. Pierzynski had three hits and two RBI for Chicago. Alex Rios had three hits and an RBI.
