ST. LOUIS, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Adam Wainwright posted just his second win in seven starts Sunday, hurling eight effective innings in the St. Louis Cardinals' 4-1 win over San Diego.
Wainwright yielded only one run, scattering five hits, walking three and striking out seven in notching his 19th win against 11 losses. The win total ties his career best, which he first accomplished last season.
Colby Rasmus homered for the Cardinals, who got three wins in their four-game series with the Padres and pulled within six games of the National League Central-leading Cincinnati Reds.
San Diego starter Jon Garland (14-12) was touched for four runs on five hits over seven innings.
The Padres came into the game leading the National League West by a half-game over the San Francisco Giants.
