BALTIMORE, Sept. 19 (UPI) -- Luke Scott smashed a ninth-inning homer to tie the score and sparked an 11th-inning rally in the Baltimore Orioles' 4-3 win over the New York Yankees Sunday.
Scott's score-tying blast over the high scoreboard in right field came off the first pitch from Yankees closer Mariano Rivera, who was trying to save the game for starter Andy Pettitte.
Then he led off the 11th with a bloop double to left off David Robertson (4-5). Ty Wigginton followed by lining a pitch to right-center field, scoring Scott with the winning run.
Pettitte pitched well in his return from two months on the disabled list, throwing six strong innings, limiting the Orioles to a single run on three hits with a walk and two strikeouts.
The Yankees maintained a half-game lead over Tampa Bay in the American League East despite the loss. The two clubs will open a showdown four-game series Monday at Yankee Stadium.
