SAN ONOFRE, Calif., Sept. 18 (UPI) -- Veteran Kelly Slater of the United States won the Hurley Pro at Trestles surfing competition in California Saturday.
The win moved the nine-time Association of Surfing Professionals points race champion into the lead in this year's ASP World Tour points race.
Slater rode the ideal 6-foot Southern California waves to 18.13 points out of a possible 20 in the final heat and beat Australian Bede Durbridge, who scored a 14.13.
The win gave the 38-year-old Slater 40,000 points in the ASP standings. Jordy Smith of South Africa is in second with 35,000 points.
"I never would have fathomed a ninth title, let alone a 10th," Slater said. "It's still a long road ahead. We still have four events and I'm just trying to soak in this win."
Mick Fanning of Australia placed third at Lower Trestles, which is named after a surf break near a railroad trestle in northern San Diego County. He moved into fifth place in the standings.
