KANSAS CITY, Mo., Sept. 16 (UPI) -- Wilson Betemit put Kansas City in front with a grand slam Wednesday and the Royals further dimmed Oakland's playoff chances by downing the A's 6-3.
Oakland fell 10 games behind division-leading Texas in the American League West with 17 games to play.
The A's took a 3-0 lead through two innings but Mitch Maier doubled with one out in the Kansas City third, Jarrod Dyson reached on an infield single and Billy Butler walked to load the bases.
That brought up Betemit, who battled through nine pitches from Trevor Cahill before hitting a homer to right. Butler added a two-run homer in the fifth to complete the scoring.
Kansas City starter Bruce Chen (10-7) went five innings to get the win, giving up three runs on six hits. Four relievers combined to give up two hits over four scoreless innings with Joakim Soria walking two and striking out two in the ninth for his 38th save.
Cahill (16-7) had won four of his previous five decisions. He gave up all six runs in five innings while throwing 100 pitches.
