S. Carolina's Saunders booted from team

COLUMBIA, S.C., Sept. 15 (UPI) -- South Carolina tight end Weslye Saunders, under the cloud of an NCAA investigation, has been kicked off the team, Athletic Director Eric Hyman said Wednesday.

"Weslye Saunders is no longer part of our football program," Hyman said in a statement. "Beyond that I will have no further comment."

Coach Steve Spurrier had suspended Saunders, a senior, indefinitely Aug. 23 for violating team rules.

In July, it was reported the NCAA was investigating Saunders and South Carolina about possible rules violations concerning dealings with a sports agent.

The State newspaper in Columbia reported Saunders is believed to be linked to the NCAA's ongoing investigation of players on North Carolina's football team, including star defensive tackle Marvin Austin, for similar allegations.

Saunders had 32 receptions for 353 yards and three touchdowns for the Gamecocks last season.
