INDIANAPOLIS, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- Indianapolis Colts safety Bob Sanders has had surgery to repair his torn right biceps muscle, The Indianapolis Star reported Wednesday.

Sanders was hurt on the first defensive series of the Colts' season-opener at Houston last weekend.

The club said on its Web site Tuesday Sanders was going to meet with Dr. James Andrews Wednesday to get a second opinion on the injury but the Star reports the orthopedist performed the surgery.

Andrews performed a similar procedure on Sanders' left biceps last year. The safety missed all but two games of the 2009 campaign.

The newspaper said the Colts are keeping Sanders on their 53-man roster, meaning he could return yet this season.

Sanders, 29, was the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2007 but has played in just nine games since then because of various injuries, including knee surgery. The seven-year pro has appeared in more than six games in only two seasons since being drafted out of Iowa in 2004.
