NEW YORK, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- The New York Rangers agreed to terms with defenseman Marc Staal on a new contract Wednesday, the team said.

Terms were not disclosed, but the New York Daily News reported the contract is a five-year deal worth $19.9 million.

The 23-year-old Staal had a career-best season last year, notching eight goals and 19 assists in 82 games with the Rangers.

The defenseman proved his dependability by playing in 202 consecutive games, including the playoffs. He has appeared in at least 80 games in each of his three seasons in the league.

Staal was the 12th overall selection in the 2005 draft, recording 13 goals, 39 assists and 150 penalty minutes in 244 career games.
