CHICAGO, Sept. 15 (UPI) -- Denard Span drove in four runs Tuesday, sparking the Minnesota Twins to a crucial 9-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox.
Span's bases-loaded, eighth-inning shot was misjudged by center fielder Alex Rios and went off his glove for a double, allowing three runs to score and breaking open the game to hand the Twins an important victory.
The win moved first-place Minnesota seven games in front of the White Sox in the American League Central with 18 games to play.
Delmon Young homered and Joe Mauer went 3-for-5 with a run scored for the victors.
Francisco Liriano (14-7) survived a shaky outing to raise his record to 8-0 in his last 11 starts. The Twins lefty surrendered three runs on six hits in six innings, walking three and striking out seven.
Chisox starter John Danks (13-11) gave up four runs on nine hits over seven innings.
Alexi Ramirez had two hits and drove in a pair of runs for Chicago.
