KANSAS CITY, Mo., Sept. 14 (UPI) -- Rookie Dexter McCluster scored on a 94-yard punt return Monday and the Kansas City Chiefs stopped a late San Diego drive to beat the Chargers 21-14.
Carrying a five-game losing streak against the Chargers into the game, the Chiefs (1-0) got a 56-yard touchdown run from Jamaal Charles in a rain-soaked contest at Arrowhead Stadium. Kansas City quarterback Matt Cassel completed 10-for-22 passes for 69 yards and one touchdown.
Philip Rivers -- who finished 22-of-39 for 99 yards and two TDs -- took the Chargers (0-1) from their own 33 to the Kansas City four in a last-minute drive that featured a 12-yard completion to Legedu Naanee on 4th-and-3. However, Rivers and the Chiefs were unable to score and the Chiefs got the ball back with 33 seconds remaining to seal the victory.
