NEW YORK, Sept. 13 (UPI) -- New York Mets ace left-hander Johan Santana is set to undergo surgery on his pitching shoulder, the team said Monday.
Officials said Santana will have surgery Tuesday at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, in a procedure to be performed by Dr. David Altchek.
A tear was found in the anterior capsule of Santana's left shoulder during an MRI exam performed last week and the Mets immediately shelved their best pitcher for the remainder of the season.
Because of the nature of the injury, Santana may not be fully healthy until next May or June, the New York Post reported.
The pitcher compiled an 11-9 record with a 2.98 ERA in 29 starts this season for the Mets. He is in the middle of a six-year deal worth $137.5 million.
