OAKLAND, Calif., Sept. 11 (UPI) -- Trevor Cahill and two relievers combined on a three-hitter Friday and the Oakland A's jumped in front early to defeat Boston 5-0.
The Athletics won their second in a row to climb back to the .500 mark.
Cahill (16-6) allowed all three Red Sox hits and struck out four over seven innings. He has won four of his last five starts.
Craig Breslow worked around a walk in the eighth and Henry Rodriguez turned in a perfect ninth to complete the shutout.
Kurt Suzuki doubled home two runs in the opening inning and then came in to score on a double-play grounder off the bat of Jeremy Hermida. Daric Barton contributed a two-run single in the second.
Boston starter Clay Buchholz (15-7) retired only three batters and was taken out during the second inning, having surrendered all five runs on five hits with four walks.
