CHICAGO, Sept. 6 (UPI) -- Geovany Soto connected on a two-out solo homer in the eighth inning Monday and the Chicago Cubs edged Houston 5-4.
Soto's homer -- his 17th of the season and 10th go-ahead blast of his career -- staked the Cubs to a victory in the first of a three-game series with the Astros at Wrigley Field.
Marlon Byrd contributed a two-run homer and Jeff Baker and Blake DeWitt each collected an RBI for Chicago, which improved to 9-4 under interim manager Mike Quade.
Andrew Cashner (2-5) got the win in relief of starter Casey Coleman, thanks to a scoreless eighth inning, and Carlos Marmol earned his 28th save with a 1-2-3 ninth.
Houston was led by Chris Johnson's homer and Michael Bourn chipped in with two hits and two walks.
The loss went to Wilton Lopez (5-2), who surrendered Soto's round-tripper.
