MLB: Toronto 7, New York Yankees 3

NEW YORK, Sept. 5 (UPI) -- Vernon Wells clubbed a two-run, first-inning homer Sunday and the Toronto Blue Jays went on to defeat the New York Yankees 7-3.

Wells ended with three RBI and Aaron Hill matched him with a third-inning, two-run shot, allowing Toronto to salvage one victory in a three-game series at New York and break the Yankees' eight-game winning streak.

John Buck contributed a solo shot for the Blue Jays, backing Brett Cecil (12-7), who allowed three runs on seven hits and walked four over 6 1/3 innings.

New York starter Phil Hughes (16-7) was tagged for six runs and seven hits in six innings for the Yankees, who came into the contest with a two-game lead over Tampa Bay in the American League East.

The game marked the return of Alex Rodriguez to the Yankees' lineup after a stint on the disabled list with a strained calf. The New York superstar went 2-for-5 with an RBI.
